Help! I’m being stalked by a book

Books By Feb 21, 2012 10 Comments

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being followed around by a book? It doesn’t seem to matter where you go, it’s there. Like the literary equivalent of an earworm.

Admittedly, at the moment, I am only going to the library, some bookshops and the supermarket so my world is small but still. It is in ALL of those places, sitting there all pert and shiny and pretty, practically calling out from its shelf. “Buy me, Kath, come on, I’m lovely, take me home. You won’t regret it.”

There’s no escape even when I go online. Yesterday, I logged onto amazon UK and it appears in my recommendations four times. FOUR. (Check it out for yourself by clicking on the image to enlarge it.)

Yes, I’m being stalked by a book (Me Before You by JoJo Moyes), which is a pretty clever marketing ploy if you ask me, because I am incredibly close to caving and buying it.

It’s happened before, of course. I’ve seen a book mentioned on Twitter or a blog or on TV or glimpsed it in a bookstore and from that point on, it’s followed me around until I’ve bought it. Okay, so it hasn’t actually got up off the shelf and waddled after me on its little legs, frantically waving its pages, but you know what I mean. Has anyone else ever been stalked by a book or is it happening to you now? If so, what’s the book and did the two of you have a happily-ever-after? I’ll be sure to let you know if Me Before You and I do.

  1. That’s a brilliant blog, Kath (as usual, of course!) and I know exactly how you feel! I was, in fact, stalked by the same book. I probably should write the next bit in small letters, but I was a bit reluctant to read this because I really didn’t enjoy the only other book I’ve read by this author (sorry, sorry JoJo and fans). As for this one…. well, I’ll wait until you’ve read it, but my tip is to keep the tissue box handy!

That’s interesting, Chris. If it happened to you with the same book… then maybe it is a marketing ploy, after all?!

I’ve not read any of JoJo’s books yet, so if I do succumb, this would be my introduction to her writing.

  2. I suspect I have the same view about the same book as Chris for we parted company about half way through (that’s the book and me), but I know JoJo has many fans so obviously she rings the right bells for some.

Yes, you do get stalked these days. Look at something on line and it’s there again day after day. Comes a point when it is simply counterproductive.

Oh, I’m not knocking the book or the author at all. I have yet to read any of her books. I just think it’s interesting how some books do seem to follow you around, while others don’t make as much impact.

Authors can only hope that their books are out there stalking people!

    1. kath says:

Yes, Karen, I guess that is preferable to being the author of the book that everyone ignores, like the kid who never got picked for teams!

I’m always being stalked by books and usually give in. It’s my one true weakness. (Well, that and shoes, handbags and chocolate).

    1. kath says:

As weaknesses go, though, none of those harm anyone else and are pretty good for you… if not always for your pocket or waistline 🙂

  5. LOL! I don’t think it is just you – I’m being stalked by that book too! I think her marketing campaign has just been so successful that she appears to be every where. I haven’t read it yet, but if I do I’ll let you know my thoughts.

    1. kath says:

It does appear to have been a very successful marketing campaign in that case, Jackie. I finally succumbed and got the book this week, so will let you know what I think of it when I’ve had a chance to read it.
