Shortlist of Seven from #CWIP completes my #20BooksOfSummer

Comedy Women in Print announced its shortlists on Monday, choosing seven shortlisted titles for its Published Comic Novel Prize category, rather than the expected six. Luckily, I’d read one of the books, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman, which I absolutely loved and recommend – so my remaining #20BooksOfSummer slots have been filled by the shortlist.

It holds the promise of an exciting mix of summer reading with some familiar names, books I’ve been meaning to get around to reading, and some new-to-me authors, notably Michelle Gallen and Angela Makholwa.

  • Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams (Trapeze)
  • Big Girl, Small Town by Michelle Gallen (John Murray)
  • The Blessed Girl by Angela Makholwa (Bloomsbury)
  • The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary (Quercus)
  • Reasons to be Cheerful by Nina Stibbe (Penguin Books UK)
  • The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman (Headline)
  • Frankissstein by Jeanette Winterson (Jonathan Cape)

All of the above with the exception of Michelle Gallen’s Big Girl, Small Town are available in paperback.

Anyone fancy reading along with me?

The Comedy Women in Print (CWIP) Prize was set up by Helen Lederer and is in its second year. It has categories for published novels and unpublished writers, with a new prize this year in collaboration with LDComics for published, self- and micro-published graphic novels. For more on the Prize, check out the CWIP Website, visit the CWIP FB Page, or find them on Instagram or on Twitter.

I struggle with humour in books for some reason so I won’t join you on this little adventure. Will be curious to see what else is on your books of summer list though

I have to admit that I do too. I’ve yet to laugh out loud at any book that comes with such a boast attached to it.
